Magnesium for Kids: A Full Guide to Understanding this Mighty Mineral

From supporting the immune system, good sleep, good mood, concentration, strong teeth and bones, magnesium is crucial to the health and development of babies, kids and beyond. With close to half of all children not meeting their recommended daily intake, we need to find creative ways to incorporate more magnesium rich foods in every meal to ensure we are maximizing the wellbeing of our little ones.

Reasons children fall short of meeting daily magnesium needs:

While there are no clear stats on the number of children deficient in magnesium, its assumed that unless a child has healthy diet including lots of green vegetables and beans, they are not meeting their magnesium intake. One third of American adults are not meeting their intakes as well.6

  • Growth spurts: During times of rapid growth and development their bodies go through more magnesium then usual.
  • Stress: Magnesium is the mineral involved in a stress response.
  • Picky Eaters: Most magnesium rich are usually not loved by many children; spinach, black beans, quinoa etc. are not common foods consumed by children. Children on a low fiber, highly processed, or restricted diet are more likely to have a deficiency.
  • Dairy: A high-dairy diet can cause deficiencies as dairy acts like a magnesium ‘leech’ sucking it out of the body.
  • Sweat: Up to 15% of our body’s magnesium is lost through sweat...so if your child sweats a lot, they likely require more magnesium to ensure they are receiving adequate levels.
