By September, the backpacks are packed, the lunchboxes are labeled, and every kid in the house is suddenly expected to sit still, pay attention, and remember where they put their shoes. It’s a lot to ask of a brain that’s still growing.
One nutrient shows up again and again in the research on kids’ focus and learning: DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that makes up a big part of the brain itself.
At Tiny Sprouts, we get asked about DHA more than almost anything else, especially this time of year. Here’s where the science stands, and how we make DHA easy to work into the school routine.
What Is DHA, and Why Does the Brain Need It
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fat that’s a major structural building block of the brain. The brain is about 60% fat, and DHA is the most abundant omega-3 in it, concentrated in the parts of brain cells that handle communication and signaling.
In other words, DHA is part of the physical material the brain is built from. That matters most from the time a baby is in the womb through the school-age years, when the brain is still developing fast.
What the Studies Found
A study of 307 children ages 2 to 6 in Northern Ghana measured omega-3 levels and tested executive function, the mental skills kids use to focus, follow directions, and switch between tasks. Kids with the highest DHA levels were four times more likely to pass the executive function tests, and kids with the highest total omega-3 levels were three times more likely to succeed on the cognitive assessments.
In a separate trial, more than 200 children who received 1 gram of combined EPA and DHA daily showed measurable behavior improvements over the course of the study.
Research on maternal DHA levels during pregnancy has also linked higher intake to better problem-solving skills in infants at one year old, suggesting the benefits start well before a first day of school.
Why So Many Kids Come Up Short
Most of the DHA in a typical diet comes from fatty fish like salmon and sardines, foods that aren’t exactly a regular request at the dinner table. Plant sources of omega-3s, like flax and chia, contain ALA, which the body has to convert to DHA, and that conversion is inefficient, especially in kids.
The result is a gap between what’s recommended and what most kids actually eat. For families who aren’t serving fish a few times a week, that gap can be significant.
